Elsa ( born Elsa ) is an abandoned community located in the Canadian territory of Yukon . The settlement is located on 97 km of the Silver Route , which connects a number of abandoned and semi-abandoned silver rush settlements, including Mayo , Cinema Hill , Stuart Crossing .
History
In 1924, Swede Charlie Brefault staked a copper , zinc and silver mine at Galena Hill and named it after his sister Els. Treadwell Yukon purchased the rights to the deposit. To support the Elsa deposit and other mines in the region, the Elsa settlement grew in 1935. The well-being of the industry, and with it the Elsa, depended on the price of metals. In 1947, Elsa became the administrative center of United Keno Hill Mines, which played a major role in the economy of the territory during the 1950s silver boom and was the second silver producer in Canada and the fourth in the world. The population at that time was estimated as 700 people [1] [2] .
After the mine was closed in 1989, only a few people remained in Els who support the abandoned city. At present, Elsa looks the same as in her best days, but not populated [1] [2] .
