Biography

Born in Grodno in the family of a descendant of the Westphalian nobles, the general of the Russian army Alfons Rummel and the gentry Maria Martsinkevich. He graduated from the Odessa Cadet Corps ( 1906 ), the Pavlovsk Military School ( 1908 ) in St. Petersburg , received a master's degree at the Academy of Arts. He served as captain in the 14th Dragoon Little Russian Regiment.

From a young age he was seriously involved in equestrian sports. He was included in the Russian team at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm . Participated in competitions to overcome obstacles (jumping) and was among the leaders, but on the last barrier his horse Zyablik hooked a beam and collapsed, crushing the rider. Almost losing consciousness from unbearable pain, he nevertheless clung to the bridle, climbed up his horse and, clutching his hand to his chest, went to the finish line. Having finished the distance (15th place in the individual classification), he lost consciousness. With a fracture of five ribs, he was sent to the Stockholm hospital. For courage he was awarded a special award - a gold medal, cast by order of the King of Sweden Gustav V.

Member of the First World War . Since 1919, he served in the Polish army with the rank of major of the 8th Lancer Regiment, with whom he participated in the Soviet-Polish war . For courage he was awarded the most honorable Polish military order “ Virtuti Militari ” (silver cross). He completed military service with the rank of lieutenant colonel of the cavalry.

Participant in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris (show jumping - 11 place in the individual event, 6 - in the team; eventing - 10 place in the individual event, 7 - in the team). At the eventing event, one of his teammates was the future general and commander of the regional army, Tadeusz Komorowski “Bor” . At the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, he won a bronze medal as part of the Polish triathlon team (in the individual event - 26th place).

1927, November, together with Lieutenant Starnavsky and Captain Antanevich, won the main trophy at international riding competitions in New York's Madison Square Garden [1] .

Participant of many international equestrian competitions ( Nice , Rome , New York , Paris, Lucerne , London , Berlin ). After resigning in the 1930s, he was a four-time medalist in the Polish show jumping championships ("gold" - 1935 , 1937 , "silver" - 1938 , "bronze" - 1934 ).

In 1939 he participated in the Second World War , was captured in the concentration camps of Dachau and Mauthausen . After the war he was in the organizational and coaching work, prepared many excellent horsemen. He was a consultant on equestrian issues of feature films.
