Biography

Jim Calhoun was born and raised in the city of Braintree in Massachusetts . In high school, he played basketball , American football, and baseball . At 15, Jim was left without a father and had to take care of a large family. After leaving school, he received a basketball scholarship at state college in Lowell , but he had to drop out of college three months later to take care of his family. Calhoun worked as a granite carver, tombstone manufacturer, grave digger, worker at a scrap metal warehouse and shampoo factory.

20 months after leaving college, Calhoun continued his studies, enrolling at the American International College in Springfield , where he also received a basketball scholarship. In the first two seasons, Jim was a leading player in the university basketball team, in the third season he became its captain and helped get into the playoffs of the second division of the national student championship. In 1968, Calhoun graduated from college with a bachelor's degree in sociology [2] .

From 1966 to 1968, Calhoun worked as an assistant to the head coach of the American International College basketball team, after which, as head coach for the year, he managed the Old Lyme basketball teams in Connecticut and Westport in Massachusetts. In 1972, Calhoun created a strong basketball team at Dedem School in Massachusetts, under his leadership the team won 21 games with one defeat and reached the semi-finals of the state championship.

In October 1972, Jim Calhoun became the head coach of the Northeast University Basketball Team in Boston . Over the course of 14 seasons, he led the university team and brought it to the leaders of the North Atlantic Conference. One of the leading players of that Calhoun team, Reggie Lewis , was subsequently selected by the NBA draft in the first round and became the captain of the Boston Celtics club.

In 1986, Calhoun was appointed head coach of the University of Connecticut basketball team. Over the years of his work, he has made the Haskis University team one of the strongest in the USA: three times she won the student championship and six times won the Big East conference championship. On September 13, 2012, the seventy-year-old Calhoun announced his retirement from the position of coach and retirement [3] . For all time, under his leadership, the University of Connecticut team scored 618 victories with 233 defeats.
