Charles Gaddon Spurgeon ( Eng. Charles Haddon Spurgeon ; June 19, 1834 - January 31, 1892 ) - English preacher and theologian, pastor of the largest Baptist church in England. One of the most prominent representatives of homiletic exegesis in Protestantism [1] .

Biography

Born in 1834 in the English county of Essex . According to his own statement, he began to practice the Christian faith consciously at the age of 15. He was baptized on May 3, 1850 , after which he moved to Cambridge , where he began his preaching work. In 1858 , already a pastor of a small Baptist community, he wrote his first printed work, Gospel Tract.

Since 1854, Spurgeon has been pastor in a large Baptist church in London , where he quickly gained popularity as a preacher and became one of the organizers of the London Baptist Association. Already in 1855, his sermons began to be printed weekly and widely distributed among the inhabitants of London and beyond.

In total, according to biographers, Spurgeon delivered about 3,600 sermons in his life and published 49 books.

In 1856 , since his own church could not accommodate everyone, Spurgeon first began to preach in concert halls, where up to 10 thousand people gathered at the same time. On June 25, 1857, Spurgeon's sermon gathered the largest number of listeners - 23,654 people, thanks to which he received the title of “King of the Preachers” in the press.

At the same time, Spurgeon did not leave organizational work either, in 1857 he organized a pastoral college in London, which after his death in 1923 was named after the founder.

In 1861, the construction of a new church building was completed, designed for the simultaneous presence of six thousand people. The church is called the Metropolitan Tabernacle, that is, the Tabernacle of the Metropolitan. Here Spurgeon continued to serve until his death.

During this period, in addition to the regular publication of sermon texts, Spurgeon publishes collections of hymns , as well as a number of theological works.

At the same time, the church headed by him is actively engaged in social ministry, organizing an orphanage in London, opened since 1867 and operating until the present.

 

Spurgeon died in 1892 in France , in the city of Menton , where he was being treated, and was buried in London [2] .

The literary heritage of Charles Gaddon Spurgeon is more than 60 volumes of sermons and 140 books on various issues of Christian theology and spiritual life [3] . Spurgeon’s sermons are considered classical in Protestant homiletics [1] , his works have been translated into more than 35 languages ​​of the world and are among the most popular spiritual literature in Baptist, Pentecostal, and other churches close to them. In his theology, Spurgeon adhered to a Calvinistic view and a conservative approach to the interpretation of the Bible, categorically denying the allegorical method of interpretation.
