Flag Symbols
The blue color on the flag symbolizes the sky of Africa and the hope for water , which is expressed in the country's national motto: “PULA” - “Let it rain.” The black bar is a symbol of the indigenous people of Botswana. White stripes are a symbol of national minorities . The proximity of these bands implies mutual understanding, harmony and friendship between the black and white races. Also, this combination of colors resembles a zebra, which is depicted on the country's coat of arms [1] .
Flag history
For a long time, Botswana was a British colony, and therefore it had no flag of its own. Only after independence in 1966, the first national flag of the country was adopted.
