Biography
Barsegh Tchon lived in the VII century in the city of Ani , the area of which was owned by the princes Kamsarakany , was the abbot of the Debravank monastery. On the instructions of Catholicos Nerses III Ishkhanzi and the consent of the Dvina Cathedral in 645, he set about the work of collecting and canonizing Armenian spiritual hymns [1] of ktsurds , which is becoming a significant phenomenon both in the history of the Armenian and Eastern churches. His collection received the name "Tchonyntir" (compiled by Tchon). In the future, "Tchonyntyr" was filled with other sharakans . According to historical information, it was Barseg Tchon who made the first attempt to create an eight-voice csurd system. By that time, there were a lot of canonical chants in Armenia, and often the singers of one diocese did not know the lyrics of another. In the current situation, according to Kirakos Gandzaketsi, at the behest of Catholicos Nerses, “ Wise men were elected to go around all Armenia and approve [everywhere] the same order ... ” [2] . Vardan Areveltsi reports that their editors were entrusted to Barsega, nicknamed Tchon, as a result of whose activities church songs were considered, from which the best were chosen, which have since been sung in the Armenian church [3] .
