Guaii Haanas National Marine Park Reservation

Haida , inhabiting the islands, and giving them the name Guai Haanas, do not separate the water and earth parts. The national park reservation was created in 1988, and in 2010 the marine national reserve was created, with the opening of which the only place on Earth will be created, where nature protection fully covers the region’s ecosystem “from mountain peaks to the depths of the sea” [1] .

Physico-geographical characteristics

The marine park occupies a ten-kilometer zone around the Hyde National Park and historic site, which includes approximately 3,400 km² of water surface around the islands of Queen Charlotte and the Huck Strait [2] .

The coastal world of Guaya-Haanas is rich and diverse. The waters of the Hekate Strait hide the contours of tundra-type plains with winding rivers, lakes and terraces flooded during sea level rise after the end of the last ice age. On the west side, the shelf abruptly breaks to a depth of about 2500 meters. The ecological region is located at the junction of the ocean depths, the island shelf and continental masses, which is the reason for the strong biological diversity [2] .

To the west of the islands in the ocean is the Bowie Seamount underwater volcano, which is also considered a protected object in Canada, but is managed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans of Canada . The volcano is located 180 km west of the islands and rises from a depth of 3100 meters to a depth of 25 meters [3] .

Park Creation

For a long time, the marine part of the historical site of Hyde was guarded in conjunction with a national park. In 2002, the Government of Canada signed the National Marine Parks Act, and in 2008, a board of trustees was formed as part of the creation of the park [4] . The Board of Trustees was involved in the framework of the act on national marine parks: zoning the planned territory of the park, prepared a management plan for the park, and studied public opinion on the creation of a marine park [5] . On June 17, 2010, Guai Haanas became Canada’s fourth national marine park.
