Geography
Pomona is a small island located in Lake Manapouri within the Fjordland National Park in the southwestern part of the South Island . The total land area is 2.62 km², which makes Pomona not only the largest island in Lake Manapouri, but also the largest lake island in New Zealand. [one]
In terms of geology, Pomona is a granite hill, the highest point of which reaches 340 m above the level of Lake Manapouri. [one]
During research in 1984, 117 plant species were recorded on the island. Silver and black southern beeches with podocarpus and other broad-leaved trees predominantly grow in local forests. There are several types of orchids . [one]
History
The island was named by James McKerrow in honor of the largest island in the Orkney Islands , Mainland , also called Pomona.
