Creative Idea

Since ten years, his passion for drawing has been awakened. After his father died in 1962, he moved with his family to Chieri , a small town near Turin . He has a strong spiritual connection with this city, and his entire teenage period passes here. At the age of 16, he met Luigi Bertagna (a student of Giacomo Grosso ), who gives him the basic knowledge of drawing by studying the figure. In the 70s, with the help of the artist Edoardo Ferrero, also from Chieri, he deepens the use of paints and works out landscape art. Continuing to develop this topic for ten years, he participates in numerous competitions and solo exhibitions in Italy. This creative phase is characterized by the first urban landscapes, and the color component bursts into his work with swift confidence.

80s

The 80s were an important stage, rich in fruitful incentives and development, which will have a huge impact on his future activities. During these years he went to Venice for short periods. But only the city of Murano quietly began to arouse strong interest in him in connection with childhood memories, when he visited the glassblower workshop. In Venice in 1986, he attends the Futurismo & Futuristi exhibition, which captivates him to the core with his contemporary poetry. At this moment, his concept of painting will undergo a sharp change: he refuses the academic prescriptions of realism and begins to seriously study the works of Picasso , Miro , Matisse and Chagall , approaching the idea of expressionist futurism . In June 1989, his first solo exhibition was held in Venice at the San Vidal Gallery . Years of experimentation of the new concept of painting lead him to create large-sized works, such as from the cycle of the “shipyard” and “battle”.

90s

Villaturo enters the phase of free composition, and at that time his exhibitions are held one after another: in 1990 at the Government House of the Piedmont Region in Turin, in 1990 and in 1993 also at art galleries in Turin (exhibitions organized by the critic Angelo Mistrangelo). In 1992, at the Accademia Gallery, he met with the sculptor Sandro Cherki, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in the city of Turin, who would devote him to sculpture. In the mid-80s, Villaturo again worked on glass and created an artistic glass workshop, which is still active today, in the Duomo square in the city of Chieri, where he continues to conduct experiments that will lead him to the idea of glass alloys. At the same time, he received the first orders for the manufacture of stained glass for the parish church of Santa Maria della Scala, as well as for the cathedral of the city of Chieri.

In September 1994, the first important exhibition of sculptures made of glass alloys “Giocoluci in vetro” (play of light from a stela) was held at the MontMartre Gallery in Parma. His trips to Venice and Murano became frequent, and it was during this period that his painting became more and more connected with the sculpture, repeating its themes, plasticity and color play, and new searches again brought him closer to the figure.

In the second half of the 90s, one after another, personal and collective exhibitions of paintings and sculptures were held. In 1996, he participated in the Artissima exhibition in Turin. From this moment on, his works have been conquering the foreign market thanks to his participation in the most important European art exhibitions: ST'Art in Strasbourg, Kunst RAI in Amsterdam, Holland Art Fair of Den Haag in Holland, Stockholm Art Fair in Sweden.

The first monograph on Silvio Villaturo, entitled “Glass Vibrations,” was published by Barengo Fine Arts and published by Marsilio Editori in 1998, and the Glass exhibition was held in the same year.

This will be followed in 1999 by a personal exhibition at the Arte Fiera exhibition in Bologna, a Made in Murano exhibition and the exhibition “Making Art with Glass” as part of the international film exhibition in Venice. At this time, Villaturo did not stop his technical experiments for a minute, and this led him to develop a technique for blowing air into glass alloys. He presented the results of this process in Segovia (Spain) in 2000 at an exhibition and conference organized by the prestigious Centro Nacional del Vidri Foundation, where he was invited to illustrate his technique along with the most famous glass craftsmen in the world. These were years of intensive work, and the sculptural basis prevails in his art, and foreign critics are more and more interested in his glass melting technique.

2000s

In 2000, he exhibited his works at personal exhibitions in Venice at the famous Palazzo delle Prigioni, in Padua at the Fiera Arte exhibition and in Shanghai at the Shangai Art Fair. This year, the magazines Art Leader, D'A, Artigianato e Alte Vitrie, published by the Altare Glass Museum, dedicated their covers and extensive articles to Villaturo. Wide recognition of the creativity of Villaturo at the national level came from the side of Berengo Fine Arts. An article about Silvio Villaturo is published in the Italian weekly Oggi, and Uno mattina, on Rai Uno, invites him to present his original glass melting technique. Vilyaturo participates in the most prestigious exhibitions in the United States: on “Sofa” in New York and Chicago, on “Palm Beach Contemporary” and on “Art Miami”, about which the magazine “World Sculpture News”, distributed in Asia and America, publishes an article about him authored by Hilary Blinks.

During these years, interest in monumental sculptures has developed and Silvio Villaturo creates large-scale works of glass and steel, which were placed outdoors in the historic centers of Verbania and Aosta during a solo exhibition in the church of San Lorenzo, held by Paolo Levi and organized by the Valle d 'Aosta.

This is followed by exhibitions in Waterford (Ireland), in Gothenburg (Sweden) and in Rivoli (Italy), in Venice, and thanks to the exhibition at the Palazzo del Capo di Belvedere Marittima, which culminated in a conference at the University of Cosenza, it again draws closer to the native land of Calabria primarily through the personal exhibition "Soul of the Stele" in his hometown in collaboration with the Vincenzo Padula Foundation. On this occasion, the third monograph entitled Soul of Glass, published by Marsilio in 2002, was published.
