USSR Championship in Russian drafts 1927

The III USSR Drafts Championship of the USSR was held in Moscow from October 13 to 24, 1927.

The games were recorded, with time control, not more than two meetings per day.

The debutant of the competition, Ukrainian Vladimir Bakumenko, won. He defeated S. A. Sokolov in an additional match, having scored the same number of points in the tournament - 13.5. Both players scored phenomenal +8, Bakumenko had more victories + 9-1 = 9, Sokolov + 8-0 = 11.

No one could have expected that the new champion of the USSR would be the young, little-known in the drafts world, Kharkov lover V. Bakumenko. His career is amazing. Bakumenko was admitted to the championship as a candidate for an additional seat provided to Ukraine. But before getting into the number of participants in the championship, Bakumenko had to defeat his rival B. Ilyinsky, who won the match with only a slight advantage (+ 3-2 = 1).

Boris Feldman , a drafts journalist and former world correspondence champion, wrote:

The time regulation adopted then lasted half a century - 1 hour for 15 moves. Such sparing control was most likely introduced at the initiative of a fanatical fan, propagandist, organizer and master of drafts, architect V. Russo. Despite the apparent low-speed, time pressure was a frequent occurrence

Based on the results of the competition, a collection of 50 selected games was published with comments by V. Bakumenko, S. Gordon, V. Lisenko, P. Mazurka, L. Potapov, A. Sidlin, M. Smolyak. The author of the book is Leonid Rubinchik.
