The book is a study of suicide as a phenomenon, and also examines it through the writer's fate. The author analyzed the fate of more than three hundred writers who committed suicide. The causes of suicide are considered in religious, sociological, philosophical, geographical and professional aspects. Writing as such is recognized by the author as a dangerous profession . Summarizing the philosophical, art and literary studies of F. Nietzsche , N. Berdyaev , V. Dahl , F. Kafka , M. Blanchot and others, Chkhartishvili identifies [1] several creative phenomena that can somehow explain the reasons for suicide.
- Creativity gives the creator a sense of supreme freedom;
- Creativity brings people together with the unsympathetic aspects of being;
- Creativity is a mortal's attempt to conquer death;
- Creativity is an attempt to make the ephemeral eternal;
- Creativity is a picture painted by one’s own blood.
Book Structure
The first volume of the book, Man and Suicide , contains several essays. The book is divided into two parts (“Man and Suicide” and “Writer and Suicide”), each of which in turn is divided into several sections.
The second volume, the Encyclopedia of Literature , is a directory with the biographical data of writers and poets who voluntarily passed away. In most cases, the author gives possible reasons for suicide. The term literaturicid was coined by Arthur Rimbaud ( French litteraturecide literally means suicide through literature ).
Author about his book
“This is not a scientific treatise, but an essay, that is, an essay exclusively private, in no way trying to take the place of the first Russian comprehensive work on suicidology.”
