The museum is located in the Tikhvin Chapel of the former courtyard of the Mologsky Afanasyevsky Monastery in the city of Rybinsk and is a kind of island of surviving Mologian antiquity.
Building History
The construction project of the Mologsky Afanasyevsky monastery on the Rybinsk urban land donated to him was approved in 1869. On the ground floor of the courtyard was supposed to be a chapel with a separate street entrance.
The chapel was built in 1871 and consecrated in honor of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God . Its interior consisted of a carpentry iconostasis with 13 icons. On the facade was a four-column portico with a triangular pediment, which is currently lost.
Exposition
The idea of creating a museum of the flooded city of Mologa was first put forward in the late 1980s by the informal fraternity of Mologzhan, which had existed since 1969 in Leningrad and Rybinsk .
Thanks to the energetic work of the initiative group of Mologzhan, the administration of the Rybinsk Museum and the culture department of the Rybinsk City Executive Committee, the chapel of the former courtyard of the Mologsky Afanasyevsky Monastery in Rybinsk was allocated for this purpose. On August 12, 1995, in the restored chapel, the official opening of the Museum of the Mologia Territory took place.
The first director of the museum was Nikolai Makarovich Alekseev (1951-2007), a researcher at the Rybinsk Museum-Reserve. He also wrote the scientific concept of the exposition and the thematic-exposition plan. In 2009, the museum was given his name.
The artistic decision of the exposition was made by two Rybinsk artists - Lyubov Ivanovna Menchikova and Alexander Mikhailovich Zhdanov, who actively and fruitfully worked with the museum for many years.
The exposition of the museum has more than 300 exhibits and includes, in particular, the collections of the Mologa Museum of Local Lore, liquidated in 1936. Among the exhibits are noble furniture, church utensils, household items, as well as objects found during archaeological excavations and expeditions to the Rybinsk Reservoir. The museum collection is replenished annually with new exhibits. The things conveyed by the Mologzhanians and their descendants become a harmonious addition to the museum and give an idea of the history, culture and economy of the Mologda Territory.
