History and Celebration

Gypsies are the collective name of about 80 ethnic groups , united by a common origin and recognition of “ Gypsy law ”. All these ethnic groups are carriers of a unique cultural heritage , for the preservation of which on April 8, 1971 the First World Gypsy Congress was held in London , which was attended by gypsy delegates from thirty countries of the planet . In the same year, the International Union of Gypsies was created in the English capital [2] . The main results of the First World Gypsy Congress was the recognition of gypsies of the world as a single non-territorial nation and the adoption of gypsy national symbols: flag and anthem . The day of the beginning of the First World Gypsy Congress, the day of the nation’s self-determination, the day of the Gypsy flag and the day of the Gypsy anthem - all of this can rightfully be celebrated on April 8, but the International Union of Gypsies decided to combine all these dates under a single name - “Gypsy Day”.

“International Gypsy Day” is an event not only for Gypsies themselves, but also for admirers of Gypsy culture, because on this day, all kinds of concerts [3] , presentations [4] , festivals [5] are held around the world, where everyone can plunge into the original folklore of the gypsy people.

Some gypsies have a custom: in the evening on the “Day of Gypsies”, at a certain time, carry a lit candle along the street.
