Biography
Born in the village of Mikhailovskaya (now Kurganinsky district ).
In World War II, being the commander of a mortar company, he distinguished himself in battles during the liquidation of the enemy’s Nikopol bridgehead. In February 1944, among the first to cross the Dnieper in the area of the village of North Cairo (Ukraine), it provided fire for the crossing of other units.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 3, 1944, Ilya Moiseevich Safonov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
In 1948 he was discharged to the reserve. He lived and worked in Baku .
He died on March 17, 1967. He was buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku .
Awards
For courage and heroism he was also awarded two orders of Alexander Nevsky and two orders of the Red Star [1] [2] .
