Galero ( lat. Galerus ruber - red hat) - cardinal hat , very large, flat, red hat with wide brim, with 15 tassels hanging from the sides. Galero is the heraldic distinction of the dignity of cardinal . Other similar signs on the emblems of church dignitaries are also called Galleys (plural).

History

After long disputes with the German emperor, Pope Innocent IV fled to Lyon . On Christmas Day 1245, during the First Lyon Cathedral, the pope appointed 13 new cardinals, giving them new red hats for the first time.

Galero comes from a simple wide-brimmed pilgrim hat. In church heraldry, it is used with a different number of brushes and in different colors.

At first, the pope gave galleros to the cardinals at their festive appointment. After death, the gallero hangs on the cardinal's grave until the body turns to dust. This serves as a reminder of the mortality of earthly life. It has not been used as a headdress since 1969 .

Heraldry
