Biography
From the poor family of an official Grigoryev. Little is known about his young years. Initially, Bryansky was destined for civil service, but the infinite desire and zeal for the theater took its toll. He studied with A. A. Shakhovsky in the "Young Troupe", who played in the Kushelevsky Theater [3] .
He made his debut on the St. Petersburg scene in 1811. He played mainly in tragedies: Othello , Iago, Shylock , Franz Moor ; Tancred (“Tancred” by Voltaire ), Philip (“Don Carlos” F. Schiller); Miller (“ Cunning and Love ” by F. Schiller), Ugolino (“Ugolino” by Field), Quasimodo (“Esmeralda” by V. Hugo) and others.
Upon the death of A. S. Yakovlev in 1817, played the main roles of the tragic repertoire . Bryansk was one of the last actors in the school of Russian classicism . A. S. Pushkin wrote [4] :
| Yakovlev is dead; Bryansk replaced his place, but did not replace him. Bryansk, perhaps more decent, generally has more nobility on the stage, more respect for the public, knows his roles more firmly, does not stop his ideas with sudden illnesses; but what a coldness! what a monotonous, heavy chorus! Bryansk in the tragedy never touched anyone, and in the comedy he did not make laugh. |
Since 1820, V.A. Karatygin began to replace him in the roles of a tragic repertoire , and Bryansky switched to the role of resonators. In the 1830s He was predominantly engaged in romantic dramas and melodramas.
Bryansky often performed the duties of a director , conveying to the actors the author’s intention and character. In 1831, in his benefit, Bryansky was the first to stage the production of “ Woe from Wit ” by A. S. Griboedov, and he played the role of Gorich. In 1832, he played the role of Salieri in the tragedy “Mozart and Salieri” by A. S. Pushkin. In 1833 he translated the tragedy of Shakespeare " Richard III " ("The Life and Death of Richard III").
He taught at the St. Petersburg Theater School (1828-1837).
He died unexpectedly for everyone from cholera on February 20, 1853. He was buried at Mitrofanievsky cemetery [5] [6] . In the 1930s, the burial was transferred to the Tikhvin cemetery .
