Conventions

Continental Micronesia operates regular passenger flights under the CO code of the Continental Airlines airline and uses partnership agreements and a general frequent flyer program for its parent company. However, to separate the aircraft of the two carriers in the traffic control centers, the company operates under its own ICAO code “CMI” and has its own radio call sign “AIR MIKE”. Continental Micronesia flights are also indicated in the passenger terminals of airports under IATA 's own code “CS”, which is a significant factor for Tokyo and Honolulu international airports serving scheduled flights of both carriers simultaneously.

It should also be noted that both airlines share Guam-Honolulu- Houston and Guam-Tokyo-Houston routes: Continental Micronesia serves the shoulder from / to Guam on these flights, and Continental Airlines serves the shoulder from / to Houston.

History

Air Micronesia was formed on May 16, 1968 as a subsidiary of Continental Airlines to provide air cargo and passenger services between the settlements of the former Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands . Initially, the carrier’s air fleet consisted of Boeing 727-100 and Douglas DC-6 aircraft, as well as the Grumman SA-16 / HU-16 Albatross amphibians operating on routes from the Chuuk Islands to Pohnpei until the construction of runways at these airports capable of accepting Boeing 727 airliners.

Operation of the 727s on local coral -based runways became possible due to the fact that the lower part of the Boeing 727 aircraft was covered with special protective material made of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) . In addition, all Boeing 727-100 Air Micronesia aircraft were specially equipped with survival kits in the open ocean, Doppler radar and a large number of spare parts (including tires on the chassis), which at that time was a rarity in the commercial airline industry.

In the early 1980s, the airline introduced a regular flight from Guam to Japan . By the mid-1990s, Continental Airlines' ownership in Air Micronesia was significantly increased and the company changed its name to Continental Air Micronesia and then, due to its full incorporation into the aviation holding, to the current Continental Micronesia .

In 1985, the company moved its headquarters to Saipan , Northern Mariana Islands [7] .

After the departure of the main airline United Airlines from the passenger market of Guam in the mid-1990s, only two US airlines remained to serve two American territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands - Continental Micronesia and Northwest Airlines . Continental Micronesia currently flies from Guam to any airport in fifty US states via the Guam- Honolulu connecting route.

As of January 2008, 1,500 employees were employed by Continental Micronesia ; according to this indicator, the carrier is Guam's largest private employer. In January 2008, the airline operated up to 236 weekly flights on regular flights to 23 cities [8] .

Fleet

As of October 2016, Continental Micronesia operates 16 Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 767-400 and Boeing737-700 aircraft , which, like the carrier itself, belong to the main airline Continental Airlines [8] .

Accidents and accidents

  • November 21, 1980, flight 614. When landing on the runway of Yap International Airport, the Boeing 727-92C (registration number N18479) got off the runway, lost the landing gear, stopped in the forest belt and caught fire. All 73 people managed to leave the plane, three of them received serious injuries. The cause of the incident was the wrong actions of the ship's commander, expressed in premature dumping of engine thrust during landing [10] .
