In October 2007, Eldar received the annual Eliav-Sartawi Award for Middle Eastern Journalism, established by the international Search for Common Ground, sharing it with Jordanian journalist Salam Nematt [5] .

Criticism

Nachum Barnea , Israel Prize Laureate , formulated the “Lynch Test” for Israeli journalists [6] [7] on their attitude of “lynching in Ramallah” (2001) . According to Barnea, Eldar does not criticize Arab terrorism , and thus does not satisfy the requirements of this test.

Eldar replied in his article that he “acknowledges the charge against him.” He writes that he

  • “... (not only) a journalist doing his job, but also with a considerable amount of passion. Any Israeli who has a conscience, especially observing the real situation near and daily, cannot write about the occupation from the neutral point of view of an impartial observer ” [6] .
Original text
I admit to being guilty as charged. I am a journalist with a mission, and also no small amount of passion. Every Israeli with a conscience, in particular one who watches reality from up close on a daily basis, cannot write about the occupation from an objective observer's neutral point of view.

In response, The Jerusalem Post columnist Kalev Ben-David wrote that if Eldar does not sympathize with the Israelis, he also “contributes little to the cause of the Palestinian people” ... [8] .

Original text
The only way that a Palestinian state will finally be established in the West Bank and Gaza is when the Israeli public is convinced that this is the wisest course of action on several levels. And if any journalist, Israeli or otherwise, cannot empathize (or express that empathy) with the Israeli public's concerns, fears and sorrows, he will end up doing little to advance the Palestinian cause, as he merely preaches to the converted and makes his own conscience feel cleaner in the process.

In 2003, David Beidin (Badin) criticized A. Eldar for accepting an invitation from a subsidiary of Shalom Ahshav to the United States with a promise of funding from the Foundation for Middle East peace his settlement investigation book, calling the receipt of money from the lobby, supported by a foreign government, a clear violation of journalistic ethics.
