Biography
Mara is the eldest daughter of TV broadcast engineer Mike Wilson and Susan Shapiro. She has a cousin — a conservative political commentator, journalist and publicist Benjamin Aaron Shapiro , three older brothers — Danny, John and Joel — and younger sister Anna. Parents met when they studied at Northwestern University , the mother was originally from the suburb of Chicago Northbrook . On March 10, 1995, Susan Shapiro was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer . Although she was subjected to mastectomy and chemotherapy, the disease went too far, and on April 26, 1996, Susan died at 46 years old (at that time Mara was 9 years old, and she starred in Matilda ).
Mara became interested in participating in the filming because of Danny, for whom filming was a hobby. After participating in several commercials, Mara received the lead role in the film directed by Chris Columbus " Mrs. Doubtfire " in 1993 , and then the role in the same- remake of the movie " Miracle on 34th Street " by Les Mayfield in 1994.
In 1995, the actress received the award "Young Star of the Year." Roles in past films attracted the attention of Danny de Vito and led to the fact that she starred in the main role of the film " Matilda " , filmed on a very popular children's book of Roald Dahl . Wilson received the " Young Actor Award" for her role in the film " Simple Desire " in the nomination "Best in the feature film leading young actress" and the young star award for the film " Matilda " in the nomination "Best Young Actress in the comedy film." She was twice nominated for the Saturn Film Awards for the best role of a young actress for the films " Matilda " and " Simple Desire . " Her appearance in the film “ Thomas and the magic railway ” was the last major role to date. In fact, the death of the mother and the unpreparedness for the glory that had fallen upon her in childhood became the reason that by the age of 13 Mara had lost interest in her acting career. At age 12, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder .
Mara Wilson also performed the song " Make 'Em Laugh " on the 67th telecast of the Academy Awards on March 27, 1995, along with Tim Curry and Katie Najimi .
Mara attended the Idillwild Arts Academy, in 2009 she graduated from the School of Arts. Tisha at New York University . Rarely filming being an adult, Mara began to devote more time to writing: in 2013, she wrote an article for the comic site Cracked.com “7 reasons why child actors go crazy” (about why, in her opinion, former child actors start lead an antisocial lifestyle), and in the same year at the New York International Festival "Fringe" was staged her play "The Herd" .
After the terrorist attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando in June 2016, Mara admitted to being a bisexual in her Twitter account.
