“Starting from the new year, a post office will open in our country ( Lopasnya , Moscow Province) with daily issuance of correspondence; therefore, from the new year, I will begin to carefully respond to letters "

- wrote A.P. Chekhov to the editor of the Niva magazine A.A. Tikhonov on December 28, 1895.

In the Melikhov years (1892-1899) Chekhov had about 400 correspondents. He wrote more than 2 thousand letters (known and published), mainly delivered through Lopasnensky mail.

In the building of the former postal and telegraph office , restored with historical authenticity, on the initiative of Yu. K. Avdeev and N. G. Vointsev, the Museum of the Epistolary Heritage of A. P. Chekhov was opened in 1987. Part of the building is arranged in the form of a concert and exhibition hall, where creative meetings, literary and musical evenings and exhibitions are held.

In the courtyard of the museum is a monument to A.P. Chekhov. The three-meter bronze figure of the writer is the work of the sculptor M.K. Anikushin .
