KV-13 was the first major independent work of the Experimental Tank Plant, created in March 1942 in Chelyabinsk on the basis of SKB-2. Leading designer of the project was appointed N.V. Zeitz . The design team included K.I. Kuzmin (case), N.M. Sinev (tower), S.V. Mitskevich (chassis) and G.N. Moskvin (general layout). KV-13 was created in the framework of the idea of a universal tank, which corresponded in weight to medium, and in protection - to heavy. A feature of the project was the widespread use of armor casting.

The first prototype KV-13 was made in the spring of 1942, however, tests carried out in the autumn of that year showed its low mechanical reliability, as well as the need for increased armor protection and the introduction of a triple tower . Although the production of two modified prototypes was begun in December 1942, the design of which took these requirements into account, the work on the KV-13 as a medium tank was discontinued in favor of the continued production of the T-34. Further development of the project, using two modified prototypes, led to the creation in 1943 of the serial tank IS-1 .

Features

The KV-13 was referred to as the “medium heavy reservation tank”. The chassis of the tank underwent the most powerful changes, where instead of 6 road wheels, 5 modified designs were used. The width of the KV-13 decreased to 2,800 mm, and the length of the hull was 6,650 mm. The tank tower retained similarity with the KV-1s tower, but acquired a more streamlined look. Almost all of the basic structural elements were cast, which reduced the internal unused volume and increased the frontal armor of the tank hull to 120 mm, the turret to 85 mm, thus surpassing the serial KV-1. One of the features of this tank was the minimal use of non-ferrous metals in its manufacture.
