Red card

Red and yellow cards in football

A red card is a sign of a player / coach being shown off by a judge in some sports , including soccer , handball , ball hockey , rugby , and athletics . An athlete who has been shown a red card is required to leave the field for the entire remainder of the match or distance in a stadium or highway, and his team is not entitled to replace him. The exception is only handball, where after two minutes the team is replenished with a new player. In most cases, a player who receives a red card is also forced to miss a certain number of next matches.

A red card is presented for a particularly gross violation of the rules of the game or unsportsmanlike behavior , in particular, a deliberate blow or insult. Fouls involving a red card include:

  • for “ foul of last hope ”
  • for a very rough game (including a “tackle” in the back, kick in the body area, kick in the straight leg)
  • for a blow (spitting, insulting, etc.) of another match participant / team personnel / fan

In hockey with the ball, a red card is also presented to the player for purely technical violations, for example, for the third removal during the match, for violation of the number of players, for violation in the sector of team representatives. In these cases, the composition of the team on the field is replenished after 5 or 10 minutes, depending on the amount of the accompanying penalty, and the player who received the red card must go to the locker room.

In athletics, a red card is presented for two false starts in the sprint or for a three-time violation of the walking technique in race walking competitions.

A red card may also be presented after the match if gross unsportsmanlike behavior is revealed as a result of the video analysis.

History

Red card after breaking the rules

At the 1966 World Cup in a match between Argentina and England , a heated atmosphere arose due to the fact that the Argentine player Antonio Rattin did not understand or did not want to understand the removal orally uttered by the judge and remained on the field for another nine minutes.

In order to avoid such misunderstandings, English judge Ken Aston proposed the introduction of red and yellow cards , based on the internationally known traffic light color scheme. At the 1970 World Cup, cards were first put into practice, after which they quickly became the standard.

  • On June 21, 2008, in a tense match of the 1/4 finals of the European Championship between the national teams of Russia and the Netherlands, there was an amazing case of canceling a red card, shown absolutely deservedly for flagrant violation of the rules. In anticipation of the meeting going to overtime at 90 + 2 minutes of the match, the Russian national team player Denis Kolodin made a rough tackle to an opponent with an obvious violation of the rules for everyone and the judge, already having one yellow card. The main referee of the meeting Lyubosh Mikhel showed the player of the Russian national team a second yellow card, then a red card and deleted it. However, it was soon established that before the moment of apparent violation of the rules by Kolodin, the ball in flight managed to instantly cross the side line and thereby left the field, which was recorded by the assistant referee on the line. As a result of the meeting of the judges, despite the obvious fact of rough play, the red card and deletion were canceled, and the number of the Russian national team was restored. Kolodin remained on the field in the two extra time periods following the episode, where the Russian national team in equal compositions achieved victory.
