Inclusion Criteria

City tram is defined as

  • passenger transport company,
  • whose services are available to the general public,
  • working in or near cities and other settlements,
  • using rail vehicles
  • working on rail tracks, built in whole or mostly on public streets and city roads.

Establishing which cities have or were trams requires some arbitrary, subjective judgment.

The opening date is the date from which passenger services were offered to the general public. Test trips and opening ceremonies could occur before this date.

The closing date is the last full day when passenger services were offered to the general public. Sometimes routes could work for a short time the following day (that is, after midnight). Closing ceremonies and farewell trips could occur even after this date. Some lines were closed due to damage caused by hurricanes, earthquakes or wars. Sometimes in such cases, the closure did not become final for some time after the actual closure of the movement; in such cases, again, the date of the last day of work is given.

Some systems have been interrupted for long periods of time (a year or longer) for various reasons, including disasters, financial difficulties, or conflicts between tram companies and local authorities. Notable cases of this kind are noted in the table. Other systems (almost all of them are small) worked or work only in seasonal mode. Again, known cases are noted in the table.

In some cases, upon the cessation of passenger traffic, the lines continued to be used for freight. These cases were not reported due to lack of information. Freight traffic on tram lines claims to create a separate list.
