Matches of applicants 1980-1981 - a stage of the competition for the World Chess Championship, where the applicant for the match with the world champion is identified.

8 participants, including B. Spassky and V. Korchnoi - finalists of the previous applicants match, and 6 prize-winners of 1979 interzonal tournaments in Riga and Rio de Janeiro - A. Adoryan , T. Petrosyan , L. Polugaevsky , L. Portish , M. Tal , R. Hubner .

In the b / w matches, Polugaevsky won against Tal, Korchnoi - against Petrosyan, Hubner - against Adoryan, Portish - against Spassky (after the main and 2 additional matches, which ended in a draw, the winner according to the Regulations was Portish, who won the first game by playing black pieces);
In p / f matches, Hubner - with Portisch and Korchnoi - with Polugaevsky (in additional games)
The final match of Korchnoi - Hubner was interrupted after 10 games (2 games remained unfinished), due to Hübner's refusal to continue the match; as a result, Korchnoi received the right to a match for the world title .
