History

Maori have inhabited the coastal strip in the territory of the modern park since at least the 15th century. On December 18, 1642 the Dutchman Abel Tasman moored ashore in Golden Bay and anchored; local Māori perceived his ships as a threat and attacked by canoe , killing four Europeans in the battle [2] [4] .

After the colonization of New Zealand began, the Europeans began to massively cut down the forest growing on the present territory of the park, its place was taken by the European ulex and [3] . The activist’s concern, about the condition of the coastal strip and its actions aimed at preserving the region, led to the emergence in 1942 of a protected area of 150 km²; The park received the name of a Dutch explorer thanks to a petition sent to the government [1] [3] . The connection of the park with the Netherlands is not limited to the name: after the official opening, the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina became the patroness of Abel Tasman, setting the tradition for the dynasty [5] .
