Biography
Antonio Cotogni was born on August 1, 1831 in the capital of Italy, Rome. He studied mainly with Achille Faldi, singing in church concerts in Rome and the surrounding area.
In 1852 he made his debut on the Roman opera stage in the part of Belcore ( "Love Drink" by Gaetano Donizetti ), then he sang in Spoleto , Orvieto , Modena , Turin , Genoa , Nice , in 1860 he made his debut in La Scala . He toured systematically in Paris , London , and St. Petersburg . Particularly successful was the performance by the singer of the parties in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi ; in particular, he participated in the Italian premiere of the opera Don Carlos ( 1867 ). In total, Cotoni’s repertoire included allegedly more than 120 parties.
In 1894 - 1898 Professor of the St. Petersburg Conservatory [2] , since 1899 - the Roman Academy of Santa Cecilia . Among the students of Cotonia at different times were Giacomo Lauri-Volpi , Mattia Battistini , Benyamino Gigli , Nikolai Levitsky , Alexandra Kropivnitskaya and others; he also took vocal lessons from Sergey Diaghilev .
Antonio Cotogni died on October 15, 1918 in his hometown.
