Haptophytes are a group of autotrophic , osmotrophic or phagotrophic protozoa that inhabit marine ecosystems. Haptophytes, as a rule, are unicellular , but colonial forms are also found. Despite their small size, these organisms play a very large and important role in the geochemical cycles of carbon and sulfur.
