The breakthrough of the dam in Kyzylagash ( March 11, 2010 ) - has become one of the most devastating floods in the history of modern Kazakhstan . The breakthrough occurred on the night of March 11 to 12 above the village of Kyzylagash , Aksu district of Almaty region with 3 thousand inhabitants.
Reasons
Intensive snow melting, heavy rains, as well as indiscretion by local authorities led to the erosion of the dam and the breakthrough of the Kyzyl-Agash reservoir in the upper reaches of the river. Kyzylagashka . It is noteworthy that the dam, as well as the Kyzylagash reservoir itself, were transferred to private hands in 2004 , when Shynar LLP started its operation, and since 2007, the Kyzylagash rural consumer water cooperative. The breakthrough was most likely due to the fact that the managers of the Kyzylagash reservoir, as always, wanted to accumulate more water on the eve of the dry Kazakhstan summer, but they did not take the flood situation in the region seriously. As a result of the 2-meter wave, the village of the same name was flooded, neighboring settlements ( Eginsu , Aktogan , Koltaban , Alazhide station, etc.) were less affected. Water also washed away the bridge on the Alma-Ata - Ust-Kamenogorsk highway.
Damage
As a result of the flood, 43 people were killed, including eight children; 300 were injured of varying severity and about 1000 were evacuated; 146 houses were completely demolished, 251 destroyed and 42 damaged [1] . The authorities of Kazakhstan promised to pay 500 thousand tenge (3.4 thousand dollars) for each victim of a flood in the village of Kyzyl-Agash and restore housing in the place of the destroyed one. Oralmans were allowed to relocate to other regions of the region.
On March 14, the funeral of 12 victims of the disaster took place. The funeral was held in Taldykorgan and Koksu district. On March 15, by the decision of the regional maslikhat, it was declared “Day of Sorrow” for the dead residents of the village of Kyzylagash [2] .
