Biography

Bertari was the youngest son of Aripert I. After the death of his father, he shared power with his brother Godepert [1] [2] .

Bertari was a supporter of orthodoxy , and Godepert supported Arianism . Bertari reigned in Milan , his brother in Pavia . Contradictions quickly grew between the brothers, which often aggravated the nobility. As a result, civil strife erupted. Godepert called for the help of the Duke of Benevento Grimoald I in the war with Bertari, but Grimoald captured the whole kingdom, killed Godepert and expelled Bertari from the country. He fled to the Avar Kaganate and asked for help in the fight against Grimoald from Kagan Kagan . His wife Rodelinda and son Kunipert were exiled to Benevento . Bertari returned immediately after the conspiracy against Grimoald, but again fled, this time to the Frankish state . When Grimoald signed an agreement with the Franks to extradite Bertari, he was ready to flee to Britain , but at that time Grimoald died [2] .

In 671, Bertari returned from exile and began to rule the Kingdom of Lombard , overthrowing Garibald , son of Grimoald. He made Catholicism the official religion, but did not recognize papal authority. Made peace with Byzantium . He fought against the rebellion of Alahis , Duke of Trento . After suppressing the uprising, he captured and released Alahis [2] .

His daughter Vigilinda married the Duke of Grimoald II of Benevento , son of Romuald I. During his reign, there were no high-profile military victories, but Bertari pursued an active religious policy. He built the church of St. Agatha, and his wife Rodelinda Church of the Virgin Mary outside the walls in Pavia [2] .

Bertari was killed in 688 as a result of a conspiracy. After him, Kunipert ascended the throne [3] .
