Biography
Björling's first teacher was his father, tenor David Björling. Together with him and his two brothers, Jussi Björling participated in the family vocal quartet. In 1928 - 1930 he studied at the Stockholm Conservatory (class of Jon Forcell ), after which from 1930 to 1933 he was a soloist of the Swedish Royal Opera [2] .
Beginning in 1931 , after a concert in Copenhagen , Björling’s fame spreads beyond Sweden. Since 1936, Björling’s lengthy concert tours of Central Europe ( Czechoslovakia , Austria , Germany , Hungary ) began. In 1938, he first performed on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera , where he sang mostly since the second half of the 1940s .
In 1944 he won the Swedish honorary title " Court Singer " ( hovsångare ).
Since 1957, the singer began to have heart problems, but he did not stop the performances, making the last entry ( Verdi's “ Requiem ”) in June 1960, several months before his death.
Björling's wife, Anna-Lisa, with whom they married in 1935, was also an opera singer.
Jussi Björling Museum is open in the city of Borlange.
