The favorites of the competition were the bronze medalist of the 1964 Olympics Kenyan Wilson Kiprugut and the American Wade Bell. However, Bell dropped out of the competition in the first round. Semi-finals were won by Australian Ralph Dowbell and Walter Adams from Germany. In the final race, Kiprugut was the leader at 200 and 400 m (24.8 and 51.0), at the 600 m mark he was still the first, but Dowell beat him at the finish line and won, repeating Peter Snell's world record. American Tom Farrell at the finish line surpassed Adams and won the bronze medal.
