Hagiography

Marina was born in the city of Bayonne, province of Pontevedra, Galicia in the family of the Roman governor of Galicia and Lusitania, Lucius Castelius Severius and his wife Calcia. Marina was one of their nine daughters. Calcius, frightened that her husband interprets her numerous births as a sign of her infidelity, ordered the servant Sery, who was a Christian, to drown her newborn children. The force, not obeying its mistress, secretly baptized the girls and gave them to other people for education. Marina and her sister Liberata were baptized by St. Ovid , Bishop of Braga , and raised in the Christian faith. When the sisters were twenty years old, they were accused of not obeying the Roman laws requiring them to worship the Roman gods. Marina and Liberatu were introduced to Governor Lucius Castelius Severius and said that they were his daughters. The father asked his daughters to abandon Christianity, promising them luxury goods. The sisters refused and were imprisoned. They managed to escape from prison, but after some time they were captured and executed by decapitation . At the place where Marina was executed, a spring arose, which came to be called “Aquas Santas” (“The Holy Spring”).

The spread of her veneration is evidenced by numerous churches dedicated to Saint Marina in Galicia, Cordoba and Seville .

Memorial Day in the Catholic Church - July 18 .
