Stefan Kim Soo-hwan ( cor. 김수환 ; May 8, 1922 , Daegu , Korea - February 16, 2009 , Seoul , South Korea ) - Korean Catholic cardinal . Start of service
Stephen Kim Soo-hwan was born on May 8, 1922, in the city of Daegu , in Korea . Educated at the Daegu Seminary , as well as at the Catholic University of Sofia in Tokyo .
October 27, 1947 was ordained priest at Daegu. Secretary of Daegu Bishop , pastoral work in the Daegu Diocese . In 1947 - 1956 and 1964 - 1966, the director of the diocesan newspaper The Catholic Shilbo . Further, the continuation of training in 1957 - 1964 .
Archbishop and Cardinal
On February 15, 1966, Kim Soo-hwan was elected Bishop of Masan . Dedicated to the bishops on May 31, 1966 , the ordination was performed by Antonio del Judiche - the titular Archbishop of Jerapoli di Syria, the internuncios in Korea . On April 9, 1968, Pope Paul VI appointed him Archbishop of Seoul .
Kim Soo-hwan was promoted to cardinal by Pope Paul VI at the consistory of April 28, 1969 . At the age of 46, he was the youngest member of the Sacred College of Cardinals at the time. He became a cardinal priest with the title of the church of San Felice de Cantaliche and Centochelle.
Participation in the Conclave
He participated in two Conclaves of 1978 , in August and October . On May 29, 1998, Cardinal Kim Soo-Hwan left the post of Archbishop of Seoul , shortly after participating as a delegate to the Special Assembly for Asia of the World Synod of Bishops . After the death of Cardinal Franz König in 2004 , he became the most senior member of the Board of Cardinals for the period of service, since he was the first of three living members of the Board, who were elevated to the cardinals in 1969 , on the list of the consistory. However, in the ceremonies of Sede Vacante, after the death of Pope John Paul II, the title protoprete ( Cardinal Protopresbyter ) to which Cardinal Kim Soo Hwan was entitled had the Brazilian Cardinal Eugenieu de Araujo Saleş , also the Cardinal from 1969 , whom Kim Soo Hwan was younger as Cardinal but older as a priest and as a bishop ; Kim Soo-hwan was relieved of certain ceremonial duties of service.
Having reached the age of 80 in 2002 , Kim Soo-hwan did not participate in the next Conclave , since he no longer had the right to vote in the papal elections. Under the Papal Intronisation of Pope Benedict XVI, he was relieved of his duties as Cardinal Protopresbyter , but after the enthronement, he was saved for him.
Cardinal Stefan Soo-hwan Kim passed away on February 16, 2009 .
