Bas-relief of the pedestal of the Alexander Column
Bas-relief ( French bas-relief “low relief”) is a type of sculptural convex relief in which the image protrudes above the background plane by no more than half the volume [1] ; if more - high relief ("high relief").
The bas-relief is a common type of decoration of architectural structures and decorative products of all times, known from the Paleolithic era : the first bas-reliefs are deeply carved or carved rock paintings . Bas-reliefs are also often placed on pedestals of monuments, on stela , plaques , coins , medals and gems .
As part of the architectural decor, the bas-relief can adorn pylons , walls, pediments , friezes , metopes , arches , capitals .
