Biography
Jean Demare de Saint-Sorlin was born in 1595 in the city of Paris; came from a noble family.
He made his debut in literature in 1632 with the ponderous novel Ariane. He became a member of the French Academy at its very foundation. He was introduced to Richelieu , at whose request he wrote a series of unsuccessful tragedies and tragicomedy. Written in collaboration with Richelieu, the tragicomedy "Miram" (1641) contained hints of the love affairs of Anna of Austria and the Duke of Buckingham . With this play on January 14, 1641, the Palais Cardinal theater created by Richelieu (the Palais Royal Theater since 1642) was opened. The plays “Miram”, “Aspasie” (“Aspasie”), “Scipion” (“Scipion”), and “Roxane” (“Roxane”) were the basis for the sharp attacks of Boileau , who chose Demara to be one of the victims of his satyr. His great, pretentious epic "Clovis" ("Clovis") was also unsuccessful. Nevertheless, Demara occupies an outstanding place in French literature due to his original comedy Les Visionnaires (1640), one of the best comedies of the pre-Hollywood period, full of curious characters and positions (types of boaster-captain, poet obsessed with pathos, amateur connoisseur and etc.). Especially successful are the female types, of which one — the image of an ugly old maid, who imagines the whole world at her feet — served Moliere as a model for his Belize in Femmes Savantes. The interest of “Les Visionnaires” for the contemporaries of the author was further increased by hints at different people, at the hotel Rambouillet , etc.
In the last 20 years of his life, Demara turned into a mystical pietist, put verses “L'office de la vierge Marie” (1645), published prayers in prose, started controversies with Jansenists, and began to present himself as a messenger of God to eradicate evil on Earth, the owner the key to the Apocalypse , etc. He also started a literary campaign against classicism and began his “Traite des poetes grecs et latins” famous “querelle des anciens et des modernes”, which was followed by Boileau and Perrot , Fontenel and Lamotte .
Jean Demare de Saint-Sorlin died on October 28, 1676 in his hometown.
