International scientific name

Cyrtopodium R.Br. in WTAiton , 1813

Synonyms
  • Tylochilus Nees 1832

The genus does not have a well-established Russian name. In the domestic literature the scientific name Cyrtopodium is often used.

Abbreviation of the generic name in the amateur and industrial floriculture - Cyrt. [3] .

All species of the genus Cyrtopodium are listed in Appendix II of the CITES Convention. The purpose of the Convention is to ensure that international trade in wildlife and plants does not threaten their survival.

Many species of the genus are common in culture.

Content

Etymology

The name comes from the Greek words “kyrtos” - curved bloating and “podion” - small foot and most likely is associated with the shape of the column foot [4] .

Spread

America from Florida to Argentina .

Most species are found in Brazil (some are endemic ).

Biological description

Medium and large sized sympodial plants .

Pseudobulbs are often fusiform, form dense groups.

The leaves are located in the upper part of the pseudobulb, mostly oblong-elliptical, membranous, vaginal, often corrugated, pointed at the end. Leaves and leaves are less than 1 cm wide and 10 cm long at Cyrtopodium linear linear , up to 10 cm wide at Cyrtopodium cardiochilum and more than 1 meter long at Cyrtopodium paludicolum .

Peduncles formed at the base of the pseudobulb.

Inflorescences racemose or paniculate, many-flowered. Cyrtopodium paludicolum is up to 1 meter long.

The flowers are usually brightly colored, yellow, red or brown, often with darker spots. In many species, flowers resemble representatives of the genus Oncidium .

Sepals and loose petals , sprawling. Lip three-blade.

In culture

The temperature group depends on the ecology of the species. Most species are cultivated under warm or moderate temperature conditions.

Painfully react to transplant and division.

In the summer, during the period of active growth, require abundant watering and high humidity . Shading is moderate.

After leaf fall, from December to February, plants are kept in drier and cooler conditions [4] .
