History
A photo shop on the site of the current Foundation was created in the 1850s, the exact date is unknown, it was only established that it was before 1858 (according to information on the back of the surviving photograph). The first owner is Karl Ludwigovich Kulish. Initially, the photo studio had a long name - Photo of Kulish in St. Petersburg on Nevsky Prospect against the Alexandria Theater in the house of Demidov No. 55. Demidov is the owner of the whole house, a merchant, and No. 55 - because it was before the numbering of the houses in 1858 . Only a few small-format portraits of this master have been preserved. In 1866, the owner changed - the studio was acquired by Italian photographer Ivan (Giovanni) Bianchi. He was among the first to photograph the city, works in the genre of photo essay. Subsequently, starting in 1872 , the photo studio repeatedly changed owners. In 1882-1883, the building in which the studio was located was rebuilt according to the design of Pavel Suzor . Around 1906 - 1908 (exact date unknown) Karl Karlovich Bulla became the owner of the shop, his sons Victor and Alexander helped him. After the 1917 revolution, the photo studio became a public institution. Alexander Bulla was sent into exile in 1928 , Victor Bulla was shot dead in 1938 on the false denunciation of a colleague, and the dynasty was forgotten for decades, but the studio continued to work, and did not close even during the years of the siege of Leningrad . In 2002, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, the new owner of the studio, Valentin Evgenievich Elbek, reconstructed the studio at his own expense and recreated his glass dome. And in the premises of the updated studio, the Karl Bulla Foundation for Historical Photography began to work, as well as a museum. The modern address of the studio is Nevsky, 54.
