Agni Purāna ( Sanskrit अग्नि Ag , Agni Purāṇa IAST ) is the sacred text of Hinduism in Sanskrit , one of the eighteen basic Puranas (called “Mahapurans”). Contains descriptions of the life and activities of various avatars of Vishnu . In particular, the Agni Purana contains biographies of Rama , Krishna, and Prithvi . This Purana also describes ritual worship, Puranic cosmology , Jyotish , history, military affairs, Sanskrit grammar, Hindu law , Ayurvedic medicine and martial arts. According to the Hindu tradition, the Agni Purana was transferred by the god Agni to the Vedic sage Vasishtha . The scholars of the text “Agni Purana” dates from the period VIII - XI centuries . [1] [2] [3] The Agni Purana is divided into 383 chapters. [4] There is an annex to the main text consisting of six chapters.
The first printed edition of Agni Puranas was published in the 1870s in Calcutta , edited by Rajendralal Mitra . [5] In 1904, the first edition of the Agni Puranas was published in English, translated by Manatha Nath Datta.
