Gameplay
The protagonist of the game is courier Cole McGrath, who was at the epicenter of the explosion. He managed to survive, while Cole acquired the ability to control electricity. The gameplay is built on this skill. Electricity is the only weapon available. As the plot progresses, the protagonist gains more and more new abilities, allowing him to fight and move around the city.
The game combines elements of a third-person shooter , RPG and platformer . In the upper left corner of the screen is a scale of energy and reputation. Energy is spent on all electric shocks, except for the simplest - “lightning” (energy is also not wasted with the ability to “flash”). In the lower right corner is a mini-map, which displays the goals of side and main missions. Also, if Cole emits an electromagnetic impulse , then the map will display the nearest sources of electricity, enemies, as well as useful items such as “Charged Shards” that increase the hero’s maximum energy level. There is no traditional health scale in the interface: when injured, the screen turns red, and in critical condition it turns gray, and sounds are muffled. Cole can quickly heal itself by drawing energy from a nearby source — transformers, cars, streetlights, neon signs, and even people. In a battle with successful killings (getting into the head or several killings with one attack / explosion), energy is replenished independently.
Cole's reputation varies from his actions. What to do, the player chooses. There are two ways - either a hero or a villain. A kind of karma also affects the ability of the hero. The "evil" appears more destructive and bloody blows. And with “good” harm to “civilians” is minimized, over time they can be treated, and they will begin to provide all possible assistance to you.
Cole has the following abilities:
- Lightning is the very first ability that a hero possesses. It does not require energy. The first few shots paralyze the enemy, then - kills.
- Shock grenade - a bunch of energy flying to the target in an arc. Deals decent damage to nearby enemies.
- A shock wave is a powerful impulse that discards objects within range.
- Megawatt hammer - a projectile that flies towards the target in a straight line and does great damage.
- Sliding - allows Cole to travel at high speed along power lines and rails.
- Antigrave - allows you to soar briefly above the ground.
- Galvanization is the treatment of injured people.
- Vampirism is the restoration of energy by pulling it out of wounded people. Lowers reputation.
- Shackles - the fettling of a wounded human adversary. Increases reputation.
- Thunderbolt - when jumping from a height, Cole emits a powerful stream of energy that scatters everything when it lands.
- Thunderstorm - powerful lightning strikes the earth, destroying everything in its path.
- Gigawatt blades - an enhanced blow in hand-to-hand combat, killing one-hit from human opponents. Available upon purchase of the appropriate DLC.
Story
The protagonist of the game is Cole McGrath, a freelance courier from Empire City, who barely made ends meet. One day, he receives an order from his superiors: to deliver a parcel to Stanton Building in the “Old City”; upon arrival, the customer calls and says open it. The premise is the Ray Sphere - an experimental bomb that destroys half of the city. Cole, barely survived the explosion and discovered the ability to electrokinesis, along with his friend Zeke and ex-girlfriend Trish flee from the Old City to the "Neon" - Empire City, the least affected by the terrorist attack. Trish is angry at Cole, because her sister died due to the explosion provoked by him. On quarantine day 14, Cole and Zeke decide to flee the city with a crowd of refugees, but the military opens fire on them. Many refugees die, and Cole ends up with Moya, an FBI agent who is trying to find her husband John: he infiltrated the First Sons, the group that created the Ray Sphere. In search of John, Cole is fighting the Reapers, a syndicate of drug dealers who have come under the control of a certain Sasha, a mutant woman whose body secretes a psychotropic substance called “tar”. Using tar, Sasha poisons the Neon water system, forcing her controlled people to join the Reapers. Failing one of the Reapers' attempts to poison the water with tar, Cole confronts Kessler, the current leader of the First Sons, who has the same abilities as his. Having reached Sasha in her underground shelter, Cole defeats her and finds out that Sasha deserted from the First Sons, but still knows about their true plans. The First Sons themselves prevented Cole from finding out about them specifically. They destroyed the tunnel and took Sasha with them on Kesser's orders.
Cole travels to Warren, on Island 2, where a gang of Scavengers, led by Alden, the son of Richard Tate, the former leader of the First Sons, runs hostage until Kessler seizes power. Cole finds John, and it turns out that Moya has nothing to do with him, and Alden hides yet another Ray Sphere. Cole and Zeke climb the Alden tower and try to take the device from him, but then Kessler appears. He inclines Zeke to his side and takes the Sphere. Cole defeats Alden and goes to the Old City - to the center of the explosion: there the First Sons built their refuge. At this point, Kessler contacts him and offers to undergo a series of trials, since Trish is in captivity. Cole saves people from bombs, but the latest test makes Cole make a difficult choice: try to save Trish or save a few doctors tied to an adjacent roof. Whatever choice Cole makes, Trish dies, and Cole longs for reprisal. He, along with John, still finds the Sphere, but again confronts the choice: use it and gain even more power or destroy it so that no one can harm people with it. In any case, the Orb collapses and kills John.
Kessler challenges Cole to battle, and the latter wins. When dying, Kesser manages to convey his memories to Cole, from which it turns out that Kessler and Cole are the same person. In the future, a certain Beast comes to Empire City, and Cole-Kessler flees, destroying the city. Later, he goes to the past and leads the First Sons to develop the Ray Sphere, which should give young Kessler (that is, Cole) his abilities. He also kills his young wife Trish so that Cole does not make Kessler's mistake - no matter who Cole should become, a hero or a villain, he must be prepared for a fight with the Beast. After the death of Kessler, Cole takes a lesson from his experience and begins to prepare for a future battle.
