Makerere University (MAK) is Uganda's largest and oldest university.

It was founded as a technical school in 1922. In 1963, he became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to University of London degrees. It became an independent national university in 1970, when the University of East Africa split into three independent universities - the University of Nairobi , Kenya (University of Nairobi, Kenya), the University of Dar es Salaam , Tanzania (University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) and the University of Makerere . Today Makerere has 22 faculties, institutes and schools, offering programs to 30 thousand bachelors and 3 thousand masters and doctoral students.
Makerere University graduates were former Ugandan president Milton Obote and first Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere , as well as former Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa , current Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, and current Ugandan Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi .
