History

The first Porsche Tennis Grand Prix was held in Filderstadt in October 1978 . The tournament is thus the oldest indoor women's tennis tournament in Europe. [1] The tournament was the brainchild of the director of the Filderstadt tennis center, Dieter Fischer, and Porsche AG . [2]

The next year, under the auspices of Porsche, a men's tournament was also held in Filderstadt, but it did not become permanent, but the female received the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) award as the best tournament in Colgate Grand Prix (women's professional tour, which included 32 tournaments then) . [2]

In 1988 , with the formation of the WTA tour, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix was included in the category III tournaments, but two years later its prize pool grew from 175 to 450 thousand dollars , [2] and it was assigned a higher II category, to which he belonged until 2008 , after which, as a result of structural changes in the WTA tour, he was included in the category of prime tournaments together with 19 other tournaments .

In 2006, the tournament was moved to Stuttgart , in the Porsche Arena sports complex. [3]

Since 2009 , in connection with the calendar reform, which has reduced the number of indoor tournaments in Europe to the limit in winter and autumn, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix has been transferred from hard-to-ground to ground, still held indoors. This is the only tournament on the WTA calendar that takes place on indoor clay courts. [1] A special type of ground cover developed in Germany allows spending only two days on the preparation of courts, which is important given that the Porsche Arena is a multi-purpose complex where various competitions and events are held all year round. [4] The tournament is on the calendar with the weekend of the Federation Cup , and therefore the national federation prefers to conduct home matches of the national team on local courts.

Winners and finalists

The undisputed leader in the number of victories in the tournament is Martina Navratilova , six times superior in singles and eight times in doubles. Tracy Austin won the first four singles tournaments and once won in pairs, and Martina Hingis added two titles in four to four singles wins in the second half of the 90s. Pam Shriver , on the contrary, won four of her five victories in the tournament in doubles and only one in singles. Lindsay Davenport won three titles in singles and doubles.

In the only men's tournament held in 1979 , Wojciech Fibak won the final of Guillermo Vilas 6-2, 6-2 and received the Porsche 928 as a prize. [one]

Three representatives of Germany managed to win the “home” tournament in singles - Anke Huber won in 1991 and 1994 , Julia Gerges won the tournament in 2011 , and Angelica Kerber won in 2015 and 2016. Three representatives of Germany sought victory in pairs: Claudia Code-Kielsch in 1984 , Anna-Lena Grönefeld in 2008 . Sabina Lissitzky in 2011 and 2013 , Mona Barthel in 2013 .

Among the representatives of the former USSR, the most titled is Natalya Zvereva , who has won four titles, all in pairs. The first winner of the tournament, representing Russia, was Anna Kournikova , who won him in 2000 together with Hingis; Nadezhda Petrova won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix once in singles and doubles; Maria Sharapova is the first Russian woman to win a single player tournament more than once.
