Women in White ( Spanish: Damas de Blanco ) is a Cuban non-governmental organization of women dissidents .
History
The group protests against the totalitarianism of the Castro regime, the persecution of human rights defenders , and the imprisonment of many political prisoners in Cuba. In particular, women dressed only in white held a protest in downtown Havana and marches in Florida's cities in support of a hunger strike for political prisoners and the 2003 anniversary of the Cuban repressions , known as the " Black Spring ."
In 2005, the European Parliament awarded the Damas de Blanco movement the Andrei Sakharov Prize for the Freedom of Thought .
Among the initiators of the protests - Reina L. Tamayo, the mother of dissident Orlando Zapat Tamayo , who died in prison on February 23, 2010 after an 85-day hunger strike. [one]
On May 4, 2010, the Archbishop of Havana, Cardinal Jaime Ortega and Alamino , took part in the rally “Women in White” [2] .
