Biography

He graduated from the historical and philological faculty of the Ural State University , then for several years he worked as a laboratory assistant at the Department of Dialectology . From 1963 to 1975, he worked at Perm University at the Faculty of Philology, and from 1965 to 1968, he served as deputy dean for educational work.

In 1965, in the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of philological sciences on the topic “Word formation of nouns in Russian dialects of the Middle Urals” [1] .

Since 1977 he worked at Leningrad State University . Associate Professor of the Department of Russian Language and General Linguistics (1963–1975), Head of the Department of General Linguistics of St. Petersburg State University (1994–1996). Since 1994 - and. about. Head of the Department of General Linguistics, Faculty of Philology, St. Petersburg State University .

In 1979, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philology on the topic “Word formation in speech activity: the formation and functioning of a derivative word in Russian” (specialty 10.02.01 - Russian language) [2] .

He was married to the linguist A. S. Stern (1941–1995) [3] .

Scientific activity

Founder of St. Petersburg psycholinguistics, author of more than 200 scientific publications and the country's first textbook on psycholinguistics, as well as a number of popular science books. The organizer of the ongoing city psycholinguistic seminar in St. Petersburg (the 1970s to the present) and its permanent chairman until his death, a linguistics group at Perm University, a linguistic seminar at the GPB named after M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin .
