Algeciras first became a separate state in 1013, shortly after the collapse of the Cordoba Caliphate , the state that united all the Muslim territories of the Iberian Peninsula. This year, Caliph Suleiman singled out Algeciras as an independent territorial unit and transferred it to the possession of the Berber Hammudid dynasty. Hammudids soon came to power in Cordoba. Formally, the first emir of Algeciras was Al-Qasim al-Mamun , who later also became a caliph (head of the Cordoba caliphate). His brother caliph Yahya al-Mutali in 1035 added Algeciras to the typhus of Malaga . In 1038, Algeciras became independent again, and Muhammad ibn al-Qasim , the son of Al- Qasim , was appointed his emir. In 1048, al-Qasim al-Vatik became the new emir.
In 1055, Al-Mutamid ibn Abbad , Emir of Seville , captured Algeciras, and soon annexed him to the typhus of Seville.
