History
The territory of Virandozero was previously part of the Kolezhma volost, which was abolished in the 1920s and became part of the Belomorsky district. The territory of the former Virandozersky village council was limited: the Onega Bay of the White Sea from the north, the Nyukhchinsky village settlement from the east, the Khvoininsky village administration and the Sumposad village council from the west. The ancient village of Virandozero is located 16 kilometers southwest of the modern village, currently the settlement is non-residential.
The name Virandozero comes from the Karelian Viranda - “a plowed field where there was a forest” [2] .
The modern village of Virandozero was founded in 1941 as a village of loggers at the Ruyga railway station [3] . In 1950, it was transformed into a working village with the accession of several nearby settlements. Until 1991, it had the status of an urban-type settlement, subsequently becoming a rural settlement.
From 1942 until the second half of the 1970s, the Virandozero narrow gauge railway operated with a total length of about 100 kilometers. By the 1980s , UZhD was closed and dismantled, as well as the settlements located on it were settled: settlement No. 2, settlement No. 3, Nermush, Cherniy Ruchey and Svetly [4] .
Current status
At the moment, on the right side of the railway there is a large part of the population, shops, a club, a school / kindergarten. On the left side of the railway, the territory is mostly abandoned, there are few residential buildings. The houses are mostly old, half of which are in disrepair. Most of the houses in the village were demolished.
