History

NT Air was established in 1971 by the merger of two independent British Columbian carriers - Northern Mountain and Thunderbird .

Regional mountain airline Northern Mountain was founded in 1959 in the city of Fort St. James and at the time of the merger was one of the largest carriers in British Columbia. By 1971, the company operated a mixed fleet of helicopters and aircraft Cessna, de Havilland Beavers, Beechraft Model 18, Grumman Goose, providing passenger and cargo transportation in a large part of the north of the country, including areas of British Columbia, Alberta , Yukon and the Northwest Territories . Following the merger with Thunderbird , Northern Mountain has focused on helicopter operations and has maintained this specialization until 2000.

The history of Thunderbird Airlines dates back to the early 1960s with the receipt of a contract from Pacific Western Airlines for passenger transportation of local importance from the city of Prince George . Thunderbird used its own base at the Tabor Lake airport, from where it operated Cessna, Beaver and Otter flights to the new city of Mackenzie , to nearby towns and temporary tourist sites of the Williston Reservoir . The airline’s air fleet was equipped with interchangeable wheeled chassis, floats for landing on water and skis for landing on snow. In the early 1970s, the contract between Thunderbird and Pacific Western Airlines expanded to include the right to operate flights to small towns in the province of British Columbia, while the PWA aimed at filling its own regional flights on jet liners from airports in Prince George, Kamloops and Kelowna . It was this addition in the partnership agreement that led to the search for aircraft hangars for parking at Prince George Airport, the negotiations on which led in 1971 to the formation of the combined airline Northern Thunderbird Air .

In the modern period, NT Air operates ten aircraft and 3 bases for the repair and maintenance of its own aircraft. As of February 2010, the company had 50 employees.
