Joseph Caleb Deschanel ( born Joseph Caleb Deschanel ; born September 21, 1944 , Philadelphia , PA , USA ) is an American cameraman and director . Six times over the course of 35 years (1984–2019) he was nominated for an Academy Award for best operator work .

Biography
Father is French, mother is American, who raised her son in Quaker traditions. He studied at Johns Hopkins University (1962-1966), then - at the School of Motion Picture Arts at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles . He also acted as a director, including in several episodes of the David Lynch series “ Twin Peaks ”, as well as one episode in the series “ Bones ”.
Member of American Zoetrope Studios, founded by Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas .
Wife - actress Mary Joe Deschanel (nee Weir), daughters - actress and producer Emily Deschanel , actress and singer Zoe Deschanel .
