Macadermott was a sprinter skater.
In 1960, McDermott first took part in the Olympic Games , but took only seventh place at a distance of 500 meters (40.9 seconds).
Unexpectedly for everyone, Richard McDermott won the 500-meter distance at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , ahead of the Soviet skater Yevgeny Grishin by 0.5 seconds. It was the only gold medal of American athletes in these games. McDermott's trainer was the bronze medalist of the 1936 Winter Olympics , Leo Frasinger . At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, McDermott won a silver medal at a distance of 500 meters, showing the same time (40.5 seconds) with Norwegian Magne Thomassen.
From 1963 to 1967, McDermott wore a beard. Since 1967, he began to work as a representative of one of the companies in Detroit, and he had to shave his beard.
After an active skating career, McDermott was also a sports functionary. At the opening ceremony of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, he swore an oath on behalf of the judges.
On June 4, 1977, the name of Richard McDermott was listed in the National Speed Hall of Fame.
McDermott currently resides in Bloomfield Hills , Michigan . He is married and has five children.
