Historical Review
The kingdom, then the county of Desmond, covered the territory of the modern Irish counties of Cork and Carrie and lasted from 1118 to 1596 . In 1606, the territory of Desmond was divided into two new counties. Just as Desmond - in the Gaelic pronunciation Deas Mumhain - denoted the South Munster , so the North Munster corresponded to the kingdom of Thomond , East Munster to Omond, West Manster to Lormond. Since the XIV century, the name Desmond has been used to designate the territories of the Gaelic-Irish clan McCarthy More , whose leaders were called the kings of Desmond , as well as the possessions of the Counts of Desmond. Relations between Desmond Counts and the McCarthy clan have been strained for centuries.
After the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169, the title of Count Desmond was granted in 1329 to Maurice Fitzgerald (d. 1356). The surname Fitzgerald was very popular among the Irish, they were called "Irish, bigger than the Irish themselves." The Fitzgeralds led two rebellions against the British in Ireland, from 1569 to 1573 and from 1579 to 1583 ( Desmond uprisings ).
