Structure of the novel

The novel consists of five parts:

  • The story of critics tells of four people: Peletier, French; Espinosa, Spaniard; Morini, Italian; and Liz Norton, an Englishwoman. All of them are teachers of German literature, mystically connected by a passion for the mysterious German writer Benno von Archimboldi, whom no one seems to have ever seen, and who never won a single award, but whose fame is constantly growing. He was last seen in Mexico, walking along the road to the village of Santa Teresa, in the north of the country.
  • The story of Amalfitano , a professor of philosophy from Chile (possible alter ego writer), who traveled half the world in an attempt to escape from the dictatorship destroying his homeland. He lived in Argentina, France, Spain, in the latter he married and his daughter Rosa was born; at the end of his life he ends up in Santa Teresa, doubting the very meaning of his existence and the essence of the events that brought him to this place. With horror, he watches what is happening around him.
  • The story of Faith . Faith (fate translated from English as fate, lots) is a New York-based journalist and editor of an African-American newspaper, a specialist in political and social topics who, due to the fault of one sudden death, is forced to go to Santa Teresa to write an article about a boxing match, gradually moving from his New York lifestyle to the life of people on the border of Mexico, with its contradictions and excesses.
  • The history of crimes , approaching the central axis of the whole novel - the city of Santa Teresa in the state of Sonora, and the terrible crimes that occur there. Without any worthy explanation, without a clear killer, without motive, but terrible and nauseous, these terrible events put a mark on the character of the people who touch him.
  • The story of Archimboldi , the mysterious German writer. The story of a man fueled by the great success that he experienced during the 20th century in Europe, and in particular in Germany. In the end, fate brings him to Mexico, Sonora, the city of Santa Teresa. The position of the Archimboldi has much in common with the position that Bologna had in the literary world, some are inclined to see in him another alter ego of the writer.
